artGuide presents Barbara Rohde in Artist Intros
Watercolor artist, Barbara Rohde discusses the inspiration for her works of art
artGuide art news blog featured North Carolina based artist, Barbara Rohde's in the February edition in artists intros. Barbara expresses the way she sees the world with multiple complex layers filled with vibrant colors and is currently creating her masterpieces in her Blue Sky Studio in Durham.
Barbara Rohde is inspired to paint many aspects of this complex world. Her broad-ranging painting style runs from stylized realism to abstract, to non-objective. She believes abstract art has its basis in reality, for example trees may be abstracted a little or a lot, while her non-objective paintings are based purely on design principles like dominance, rhythm or repetition. Barb chose watercolor as her primary medium because she is excited by the transparencies, the layering possibilities, and especially strong color.
Originally from a small town near Buffalo NY, she played instruments and sang everyday with her family, learning to appreciate and participate in the arts from the start. Barb loved drawing, began painting beside her mother, a gifted artist, and later studied for a degree in art education. After college she married, lived and worked in Rochester NY, East Lansing MI, Gainesville FL, and now works in her Blue Sky Studio, in Durham NC. Many art classes and workshops helped Barb find her passion in watercolor painting. She taught watercolor several years at the local Arts Council and became an active member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina, earning her Signature Status. Recently she has challenged herself to explore painting on a variety of surfaces and to create textures in unique ways.
