While preferences about the degree of functionality, porcelain over stoneware, bright colors vs earth tones, or wheel thrown over hand built may divide collectors of fine handcrafted clay, they are united in their love of the basic process by which wet earth becomes solid and impermeable.  Shoppers at Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair will have the opportunity to indulge their own particular preferences when more than 100 of the finest artisans from across the United States fill the booths at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem, NC on November 18 and 19.  The Fair, which has been called one of the 10 best fine craft shows in the country, presents a broad sampling of the finest work available in artist-designed handmade home goods, wearables, jewelry, furniture, and decorative items.  This year’s Fair will feature more than 25 artists working in clay, each presenting their own one-of-a-kind vision.

Since its founding by a group of craft makers and craft collectors in 1963, this juried membership guild has consistently attracted the most respected artisans working in the craft media.  A rigorous two part peer jury process insures that those invited and accepted for membership are not only masters of their chosen technique, but are creative, distinctive, and innovative.

Clay collectors will find stoneware, porcelain, and earthenware glazed with exuberant color, subtle earth tones, and delicate graphic designs.  Sculptural works, range from fanciful animals to thought-provoking sculptures inspired by nature, myth, memory, and spirituality.  More than just a shopping experience, Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair also features ongoing clay demonstrations presented by exhibiting artists that provide a window into the creative process, whether they are throwing, hand building, carving, coiling, or burnishing.
