Raleigh Artist Bekah Haslett discusses her Landscape Works
Bekah Haslett shares with artGuide her landscape pieces
artGuide art news blog featured a few select artists for this month's editorial about landscape and cityscapes. Artist Bekah Haslett from Raleigh, North Carolina attempts to create landscapes in which she could see herself relaxing in.
"I try to create paintings that I'd like to walk into. When I'm finished and it looks like a place I'd like to spend some time, that's a good thing. The elements of a scene that catch my eye are the way the light and shadow interplay, the way the colors blend and swirl, or just the emotion of a place. Recently, I have been attracted by the emotion in faces and figures. Trying to capture that on canvas is my new direction. I like to paint en plein air (outside from life) and try to capture that elusive essence that made me stop and look in the first place. If I can make the viewer see what I saw, I consider that a victory!"
Bekah has been painting landscapes and still life for about 8 years. She has recently added figurative work to her repertoire. She attempts to capture a mood or feeling in a scene, painting it “en plein air” (painting outside from life) or in her studio from photos she has taken while traveling. She participated in the Quick Draw competition at the Forgotten Coast Plein Air Paintout in Florida in May of last year and will be participating again this May. She is a member of the American Impressionist Society, Women Painters of the Southeast, Portrait Society, PaintNC, Fine Arts League of Cary, Visual Art Exchange, and the Wake Forest Artists Guild. She has traveled to study under modern representational and impressionist masters Lori Putnam in Italy, Kevin MacPherson in Sedona, Quang Ho in Nashville, Dawn Whitelaw in Raleigh and Mississippi, Lori Putnam in Italy, Kevin Beilfuss in Nashville, and Peggi Kroll Roberts, John Poon, and Dan Beck in Raleigh.
